Cupping and Moxa

Cupping

Cupping is a traditional technique using glass cupping jars, in which a vacuum has been created. Gwyneth Paltrow, who attended a film premier with cupping marks clearly visible on her back, brought cupping to public attention. It is interesting to note that if there is cold or blood stagnation (which are terms used in traditional Chinese diagnosis), the cupping will cause the marks we saw on her, which are painless.

Moxibustion

This is an extremely pleasant, warming treatment and is often used on people who complain of feeling the cold. It’s also sometimes used on sore or sprained joints.

Special Chinese herbs, which are shredded and dried, are burned to create warmth. This is also known as moxa, and is either used on the needle handles or directly on the skin, in which case it is removed before it is completely burned down.
